We've been filming Driving Sports TV with high definition video cameras since 2005. Nothing we hate more than having to "downgrade" the picture just to distribute it on disc. Now, thankfully, we don't have to.
With the introduction of Blu-Ray players, there is a new sub-spec that is also included called DVD-R AVCHD. This is a Blu-Ray encoded video track distributed on a traditional DVD disc. The only downside is capacity: we can only fit about 45 minutes worth of 720p HD content. The upsides are plenty: the disc plays on almost any Blu-Ray player (exception being some first-gen models) and it can open and play on almost any DVD-equipped computer. That's right, HD video on your computer without having to get a Blu-Ray drive! You may need a program like VLC (which is free, download it here) to play the disc, but that's probably not a surprise.
SINGLES!
We came up with the idea of DSTV Singles to match this new format. Basically, we offer 2-4 of our shorts, plus some extra content on a disc that is Blu-Ray player ready.
Of course, not everyone is ready for high-definition video. So, we also offer "standard" or Widescreen DVD editions for folks that just want to plug it into a shop DVD player, play it on the road, etc. We'd much rather sell the Blu-Ray singles, but that's just the way it is, right?
